Down High School

Downpatrick, Northern Ireland

A Landmark Education Campus

The £44 million Down High School represents a best-in-class educational campus in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland. Designed as a modern, co-educational post-primary facility for students aged 11-18, the school accommodates over 950 pupils from across the South Down region.

Set within one of Northern Ireland’s oldest towns, the campus occupies a prominent position at the heart of the local community. Surrounded by rolling hills and rich in heritage, the development carefully balances contemporary design with its historic setting.

The project was delivered by Graham Construction and sustainability was a key driver throughout the project. The campus incorporates a range of environmentally conscious features, including green roofs, expansive wildflower meadows, raised planting beds, and dedicated greenhouse spaces. Extensive cycling facilities further promote sustainable travel, while a thoughtfully designed sheltered courtyard provides an attractive and functional outdoor space for students.

Metal Technology’s architectural glazing systems were installed by fabricator Turkington Windows and played a pivotal role in shaping the building’s modern identity. Floor-to-ceiling glazing maximises natural daylight, enhances energy efficiency, and creates bright, open learning environments that support student wellbeing and engagement. Products installed in the scheme were: System 5-20D Hi+ Thermal Door, System 4-35 Hi+ Thermal Casement Window and System 17 Curtain Walling.

The result is a future-focused educational facility that not only elevates the learning experience but also serves as a lasting asset for the Downpatrick community and generations to come.
